Yesterday, Sancton was proud to attend the 10th Annual Mainland Nova Scotia Building Trades Conference, with our President, Matt Sancton, representing us among a powerhouse gathering of industry leaders, labour champions, and public officials committed to shaping the future of skilled trades.

🔨 A Day of Reflection and Forward Motion
The conference kicked off with warm and welcoming remarks from Mayor Andy Fillmore, setting the tone for a day filled with collaboration and insight. A special highlight was the recognition of Brad Smith’s retirement and the appointment of Alison Casey as the new Executive Director of Mainland Building Trades, marking a moment of gratitude for past leadership and optimism for the future.

🌎 National Collaboration & Provincial Leadership
Attendees heard key national updates from the Building Trades, as well as a compelling address from David Piccini, Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. His message on fostering free trade between Ontario and Nova Scotia resonated strongly—two provinces, united by shared goals, leading the way in workforce mobility and opportunity.

🛠 Honouring Community and Vision
The keynote from The Honourable Nolan Young, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration, emphasized the critical role skilled trades plays in the province’s growth. And we were particularly inspired by an update from Hope Blooms, whose greenhouse—funded and built by the Mainland Building Trades and NSCLRA—is a shining example of what can be achieved when community and construction work hand in hand.

At Sancton, we believe in showing up—at job sites, in communities, and in the conversations that shape our industry’s future. Thanks to the Mainland Building Trades for hosting a fantastic event and giving us the chance to connect, listen, and continue building what matters.
